A 10-MILE race through Pembrey Country Park is this year being held in memory of Sospan Road Runners founder Hugh Rees.

The MT 10 – a fast, undulating and traffic-free 10 mile multi-terrain race – is organised annually by the Llanelli-based club, attracting athletes from across the country.

It is being held on Sunday, November 17 at 11am taking in the beautiful scenery of Pembrey Country Park with parts along forestry tracks and a section on Cefn Sidan beach.

A founder member of the Sospan Road Runners, Hugh Rees died in September aged 73 after a long illness.

A former football referee, he was also heavily involved in local football and held a number of senior posts including secretary of the Carmarthenshire Junior Football League, vice-chairman of Carmarthenshire Sports Council, a council member of the West Wales Football Association and president of the Carmarthenshire Football League.

SRR chairman Arwel Davies said: “This year’s race is being held in tribute to Hugh Rees. A founder member and past chairman of the Sospan Road Runners he was also race director of the MT10 from 1984 to 1996, so it was only right that this race was held in his memory.

“Hugh was a wonderful chairman with many sporting achievements throughout his life including running six London Marathons. He was made a lifelong president of the club which showed just how highly respected he was.”

The MT 10 includes the Welsh Trail Championship Short Course Race and is sponsored by GES Recycling.

There are more categories this year so more prizes to be won including under 35, 35+, 45+ and 55+ male and female.

Welsh Championship categories are under 20, senior, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+.

Entries are £15 (affiliated), £17 (unaffiliated) or £20 on the day. Minimum age is 17. Welsh qualified entries must received seven days before closing date.
