International sports woman, Non Evans MBE, will be officially opening Hendy’s new Multi Use Games Area. Finishing touches are being made to the new MUGA on Hendy Park, Heol Y Parc for the official opening on Saturday 9th November, commencing at 11am. Throughout the morning there will be demonstrations by teams of local children to show what sports can be played on the new games area.

The Multi use games area is going to be a free to use facility for the community to enjoy for the majority of the time however it will be available to hire to local sport teams, schools, colleges, businesses, unaffiliated groups etc.

“By developing this new and exciting facility we hope to encourage female sports teams in Hendy as currently there are no female teams. By providing state of the art training facilities the appeal will be larger.” Owen Jones, clerk to Llanedi Community Council.

Funding from WREN, which distributes funding on behalf of FCC Environmental, the SWM community and environmental fund, administered for CWM environmental Ltd by Grandtscape, the Veolia environmental trust and Carmarthenshire County Council County Collaboration Fund + CAVS Community Development Fund. Helped the Llanedi community council produce this fantastic sports facility costing ÂŁ144,000.

“We are grateful to all the organizations and individuals who have helped us achieve our goals, especially development help from Collaborative Communities.” Said Owen Jones

“As a club, every winter we hire indoor facilities in Llanelli to train on once a week in a bid to preserve the playing fields for match days. A facility in the village on which to train would offer a far better solution, reducing cost and increasing participation. Our junior teams could also use the facility through the winter when tag rugby has to be cancelled, sometime for periods of weeks on end, due to inclement weather. This would have a profound positive impact on ensuring regular training and matches thus maintaining interest and participation levels.” – Hendy Rugby Football Club

“This would mean so much to the village which has such a strong tradition for sport, as you may already know as a football club we are unable to train outdoors during the winter months and the rising cost of hire of facilities and the travelling is becoming a real problem, therefore the junior section of the club do not have the activity during this time…” – Hendy AFC

The MUGA is part of the community council’s long – term plans to create a vibrant park that the people of Hendy can enjoy and be proud of. The Hendy park committee hopes to target and improve general health and well being by creating this state of the art facility. Therefore MUGA will be able to accommodate a Varity of sporting teams and provide excellent training facilities; it is 50 metres in length and 30 metres wide.

With backing from the local schools, sports clubs and the community, the MUGA will be the future of Hendy Sports.
