COUNCILLORS in Carmarthenshire donated cash to the Phillipines disaster fund during yesterday’s council meeting.
Chair Terry Davies allowed bags to be passed around during the meeting for councillors to make donations to the fund.
Around £300 had been collected by the end of the meeting from the 60+ members of the council who were present.
The collection followed a request by Cllr Tom Defis on behalf of Christian Aid, one of the UK charities providing help to communities on the Philippines coast devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.
The confirmed death toll stands at more than 2,300 but is likely to rise, and the UN says some 11 million people have been affected by the typhoon.
Christian Aid is one of 14 member agencies which makes up the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which provide aid after disasters in the world’s poorer countries.
Cllr Defis thanked everyone at the end of the meeting. He said: “We have collected £240 in cash plus some personal cheques which will total around £300. That will make a real difference.”
