As weather forecasters predict a cold snap next week with temperatures set to plummet and the risk of wintry showers, Llanelli Assembly Member Keith Davies and Member of Parliament Nia Griffith have organised a unique event to help local people get ready for winter.
The now empty former Burton’s store, next to Boots the Chemist on Stepney Street in Llanelli town centre will be transformed into a ‘pop-up advice shop’ tomorrow, Friday (15th November) offering local people the chance to meet a variety of local organisations between 10.30am and 2.30pm.
A wide range of local service providers will provide tips an advice on staying safe and well this winter, including Care and Repair, the emergency planning team from Carmarthenshire County Council and Natural Resources Wales as well as financial advice from Save Easy Credit Union and Citizens Advice Bureau.
Keith Davies AM said:
“I have previously organised an event around work and skills which was very successful. This time, I felt it was important to hold an event that focussed on showcasing the support available to help people get through the winter.
“Many local families will find themselves in the situation where they will have to make tough choices about heating and eating this winter. Several of the organisations attending this Friday will be able to provide help and guidance from managing budgets to energy efficiency.”
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service will be offering free electric blanket testing and an opportunity to sign up for a free home safety check. Hywel Dda Local Health Board will be encouraging attendees to stay well this winter as part of their annual campaign.
Home heating advice will be provided by NEST and Carmarthenshire Energy whilst Dyfed Powys Police will be highlighting the ways in which you can keep yourself and your property safe over the winter months.
Nia Griffith MP said: “The whole idea of a one stop, pop up shop is so that we can get as many people to come together for help and advice. It will also be an opportunity to discuss any local concerns people may have with Keith and me.”
Keith Davies AM and Nia Griffith MP will be holding an advice surgery for constituents to speak with them directly about issues of local concern during the event.
The Getting Ready for Winter Advice shop will be open this Friday between 10.30am and 2.30pm at the Old Burton’s Shop (next door to Boots the Chemist) in Llanelli Town Centre.
