CHILDREN were evacuated from Copperworks Infant School yesterday morning due to an electrical fault in the building.
Headteacher Kim Sherlock took the action after a smell of burning was found to be coming from one of the classrooms.
The Fire Service was called and arrived at around 8.50am. Parents who had arrived at the school with their children were evacuated according to the school’s procedure.
Two members of staff were checked by paramedics for inhalation of fumes but were found to be fine.
The smell was found to be coming from a faulty light switch in one of the classrooms, and the fire service switched off the electricity.
The school remained closed, as there was no power or heating whilst work was carried out on repairing the faulty light.
All parents have been kept informed and the school did not reopen yesterday but it is expected that the repairs will have been made by Monday.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s education executive board member Cllr Keith Davies said: “The headteacher must be praised for her prompt and decisive action regarding this incident.
“The fire service also praised her for the way the evacuation procedure was carried out.
“We can only apologise to parents for the inconvenience and reassure them that the work should be complete soon, and that it should be business as usual from Monday.”
