Safety tips for shoppers this Christmas

When you’re out doing your Christmas shopping this year Dyfed Powys Police is asking you to follow some top tips to keep safe.

There have been a few cases in Carmarthen of theft occurring, in particular of purses.

And even though these cases are few and far between, we’re reminding shoppers to take extra care.

“There are a couple of simple steps which people can follow to ensure they don’t become a victim of crime at this time of year,” said Inspector Neil Jones. “The shops are very busy in our towns at this time of year, and everyone is in a hurry. But a few simple steps will prevent you being a target for thieves.

“First of all, keep an eye on your bag and your wallet when out shopping. Make sure you keep your purse or wallet somewhere close to your body where you can feel it and when you take your shopping to your car put it out of site, don’t leave it on the car seats.

“if you need to take money out from a cash point machine, make sure you shield your PIN number and put the money away quickly and securely. Be vigilant.

“It’s also worth thinking about online security too, as many of us choose to do our Christmas shopping on the internet. Shop only with online retailers you know about. Or research them first to ensure they are reputable and reliable. Make sure that your credit card details will be encrypted securely before being sent across the internet and never give out passwords.

“It is also important to remember to register your valuables. You can do this online at immobilse.com. If the worst happens and you’re burgled but the police recover the stolen items they will search the immobilise database and return the goods to the rightful owners.”
