Swansea City ended Newcastle United’s of four successive victories with an emphatic 3-0 win at the Liberty Stadium.
Despite missing forwards Michu and Wilfried Bony, goals from Nathan Dyer, a Debuchy own-goal and a spectacular effort from Jonjo Shelvey sealed the win.
Newcastle’s Loic Remy has been in sparkling form this season and he went close to scoring again. A cross from Debuchy found the striker with a free header, which was well kept out by Michel Vorm.
Alvaro Vasquez was again roped in to replace Swansea’s record transfer, and he went close to opening the scoring early on but his shot went just wide. However, his game was over after half-an-hour, with a groin injuryand was replaced by Dyer.
The rest of the half seemed to be heading for stalemate but Swansea managed to get the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time. Alejandro Pozuelo’s cross was poorly parried away by Krul, straight to Dyer who rifled in from close range.
And the former Southampton man had another chance to double the Swans’ lead after the break. Jonathan De Guzman’s cross found the head of Dyer but his tame effort was collected by Krul.
Shola Ameobi went close to levelling for Newcastle but Vorm was alert to tip away his volley.
From the resulting counter-attack, Shelvey fired into the side netting but Swansea had their hearts in their mouths only minutes later.
After picking up Yoan Gouffran’s cross, Remy did brilliantly to fashion a shot at goal which was blocked by Ben Davies.
As Newcastle protested furiously for handball, Swansea broke up the other end to double their lead. A lovely through ball from Pozuelo put Shelvey one-on-one with Krul, but the Dutch international goalkeeper could only parry onto Debuchy who put through his own net.
Shelvey nearly put his name on the score sheet shortly after as his curling effort, from 20 yards, was brilliantly kept out by Krul. In the aftermath, Shelvey may count himself lucky to be on the pitch after squaring up to Debuchy.
And the England international did get his goal, ten minutes from time, when he curled in a 25 yard effort which Krul couldn’t keep out this time.
