LLANELLI Leisure staff reacted quickly to support evacuated families in the Llanerch gas leak emergency on Monday evening, (December 16) when alerted by the civil contingency team and police.

Emergency services that there was a strong smell of gas in Llanerch around 6pm and all emergency partners swung into action.

Police supported the evacuation to leisure centre where staff prepared three function rooms with seating and tea and coffee making facilities after being told that possibly as many as 75 families and up to 200 people might have to be catered for.

Because of the small numbers actually evacuated to the centre less than a mile from Llanerch, the large sports hall was not commissioned and there was little disruption to centre users.

County executive board member for leisure services Cllr Meryl Gravell praised the leisure centre staff and the emergency services for their prompt and efficient actions.

She said: β€œIt is comforting to know unrehearsed emergency practices swing into place to ease the trauma and discomfort of those involved in such unforeseeable circumstances.”

The evacuation alert was made to the centre at 7.30pm and the all clear given by 8.10pm.
