OVER 140 people have moved in to specially adapted homes with the support of Carmarthenshire County Council during 2013.

It’s been a busy, yet rewarding, year for the two staff – a housing officer and an occupational therapist – that make up the Accessible Housing Register Team.

Adaptations help disabled people to live safely, securely and comfortably in their own homes, with changes – large or small – tailor-made to their individual requirements.

It can make a huge difference to people’s lives, as this Carmarthenshire resident (who wishes to remain anonymous) can testify.

“My husband was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis many years ago and he could not access the stairs, bathroom or bedrooms in our house,” she said.

“It has been difficult for him to get around the house on a daily basis, which has been very stressful for him.

“We applied for an adapted bungalow, and this year we were allocated one with a specially adapted bathroom, and other adaptations including a ramp for his wheelchair.

“It has made life for him, and myself, easier and less stressful.

“We are in a lovely location, and are very happy here, and very grateful to the team who made it possible for us.”

Disabled adaptations can include anything from a level access entrance, to a stair or through-floor lift, walk-in shower or even a ground floor extension in some cases.

People can apply themselves, or be referred by a health or social care professional.

An assessment process is carried out by an occupational therapist, following which a match is made with an adapted property. An accompanied visit is then carries out to ensure suitability.

Cllr Tegwen Devichand, Executive Board Member for Housing, said: “It is wonderful to know that we have made life easier for 140 people and their families. We know it’s not always an easy process, but it is hugely rewarding for the team to see the positive outcomes.”
