Police in Llanelli say a scheme which reminded motorists to keep their cars safe and secure has seen a sharp decline in the number of thefts from cars this past Christmas.
The vulnerable vehicle scheme saw neighbourhood policing officers target cars where a window had been left open or valuables were left clearly on display inside.
“Officers sent out a total of 120 letters to motorists who’d not left their vehicles safe and secure between 1st December and 10th January,” said Sergeant Justin Evans. “And I’m pleased to say that this action has resulted in a positive outcome.
“We’ve had only one theft from an unattended vehicle during that time, compared to 18 which happened during the same period last year.
“This scheme has been about prevention and education and I’m pleased to say it appears to have had the desired effect. But don’t let that make you complacent. Just because the festive season is over, doesn’t mean criminals won’t be on the look out for an easy target.
“Always remember to keep your vehicles locked and secure and do not leave any valuables on display inside them.”
