If you like your music heavy then the Masons Arms was the place to be on Friday 17th January for the Llanelli Music Scene Metal Night. I had the great pleasure of booking the bands Tidal Reach, Helldown and Sepulchre for the night.
The first band of the night was Tidal Reach who played their first ever gig in Llanelli, opening their set with a cover of Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, followed by some original songs including ‘The Edge of Reason’ which is track five on the Llanelli Music Scene Downloadable cd (albeit with a different singer on the track) . Tidal Reach played an impressive set with splashings of maiden in their guitar sound and their solos. The band finished the set with a great cover of the Judas Priest classic Breaking the Law with an improvised guitar solo that fit the song well.
Next up was Helldown ! Helldown give us metal in the true sense of the word. The band played a set of mostly original songs aside from well played covers of one Exodus and one Slayer cover. With their old school metal sound Helldown gel well together and play some mighty metal riffs set to an excellent rhythm section. Drummer Ross even responded to an unexpected call for a drum solo from crowd members and he competently took on this task to display his thrash drumming skills.
Headline act Sepulchre played their first gig at the Masons in over two years .
This duo can certainly make a sound big enough for a whole band and they played a lively and energetic set of metal which was welcomed by a core of moshers watching the band. Despite having a chest infection drummer Aimee beat the drums like there was tomorrow and singer and guitarist Darren put on a good show as front man.
An all round great night of Metal at the Masons .
The Next Music Scene gig at the Masons Arms is on Friday 21st February .
