Scarlets’ South African tighthead prop Jacobie Adriaanse believes the Scarlets have it all to play for as Gloucester visit Parc y Scarlets this Friday evening in the LV= Cup competition.
Having joined the Scarlets during the 2012-13 season Adriaanse has made 29 appearances for the Scarlets since moving from the Golden Lions.
With a big challenge ahead on Friday against Scarlets’ former Head Coach Nigel Davies, Adriaanse said: “There’s still a cup for us to win and we’ll be putting all of our efforts into the game against Gloucester.
“They have a very competitive squad and they’ve showed that they can be competitive. We’ve done our homework, prepared well and we’re up for the challenge.”
With eleven first team players called into Wales training camp ahead of the Six Nations Championship, and a number of key players on the sidelines with injuries, the Scarlets will field a new-look squad against the Cherry and Whites this Friday evening.
Adriaanse went on to say: “Training has gone really well this week. The young guys have brought in a new kind of energy and us older heads have to step up and keep up with them!
“As a player, the only thing you want is to be given the opportunity to play and the young guns that have come in are really relishing the opportunity and the challenge. I think they’re going to step up this weekend.”
Scarlets currently have strength in depth at tighthead with former Wales Under 20s prop Samson Lee performing well for the region, earning himself a Wales call-up alongside Rhodri Jones who is currently learning his trade at tighthead after switching from the loose.
“I’ve enjoyed every moment here at the Scarlets so far, there’s a great competitive edge here within the tighthead position at the moment and I think that helps us all to make sure we’re on top of our game every week.
“The competitive atmosphere brings the best out of all of us.”
On the return of the LV= Cup campaign he said: “Gloucester is a must win for us, there’s a cup up for grabs and as a club that’s what we want to perform to – we want to win some silverware for the region.
“We have to work hard and really grind out a win.”
Scarlets v Gloucester, Friday 24th January, kick-off 7.30pm
