It is with great sadness that the Scarlets today, (Friday 24th January), announce the passing of one of Llanelli’s greats – Hefin Jenkins; a Scarlets Life Member and an active member on the region’s current Board of Directors.
Burry Port born Mr Jenkins, a career Scarlet and a true gentleman, made over 400 appearances for the club over 12 seasons and played at number 8 in the great 9-3 victory over New Zealand in 1972.
Mr Jenkins, born on 4th March 1950, made his debut for Llanelli against Swansea on 1st April 1969 and played his last game for his beloved club against Kidwelly on 30th April 1980.
Hefin Wyn Jenkins started his rugby career at Llanelli Grammar Schools and went on to play for Wales B as well as being capped for the Barbarians.
As well as being a Heritage Director on the Scarlets Executive Board Mr Jenkins was Llanelli RFC Chairman in the early 1990s.
Scarlets Chief Executive Mark Davies said: “We would like to express our deepest condolences to Hefin’s wife Valerie and their extended family at this very difficult time.
“The news has come as a shock to us all here at Parc y Scarlets today. Hefin was a well respected man, a Scarlet to the core and a true gentleman.
“He will be missed by all and we would ask supporters to join us a few minutes early at the ground this evening to pay respects to a great man and a lifelong Scarlet.”
Mr Jenkins leaves wife Valerie, younger brother Iwan and family.
The Scarlets paid their respects to Mr Jenkins at yesterday’s evening game against Gloucester Rugby with a minute silence pre-match.
