Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and here in Carmarthenshire thousands of school children kick-start their day with a full tummy, thanks to free breakfast clubs.
As part of National Breakfast Week this week, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Catering Service is raising awareness of the free breakfast initiative available throughout the county.
Breakfast clubs help improve the health and concentration of pupils, and support in raising the standards of learning, plus attainment.
There are currently 99 primary schools taking part in the scheme across the County.
Catering Services Manager, Sandra Weigel, said:” It’s important that children from a young age understand the benefits that come with eating a healthy breakfast.
“Our breakfast clubs are a great way to ensure children eat well at the start of the day, which not only helps their concentration in the classroom, but also gives mums and dads an extra half an hour in the morning!”
The majority of Carmarthenshire primary schools run a breakfast club which include also include activities and games. Many opening at 8:00 and pupils can choose from a range of options for breakfast including beans on toast and non-sugarary breakfast cereals.
Executive Board Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Keith Davies, said: “Children who eat breakfast at school start the day ready to learn. There is a fantastic take-up in Carmarthenshire, but there’s always room for more.”
