Cosmic wonders are on the menu along with cawl and hot chocolate at a Star Party in the National Botanic Garden of Wales on Friday February 7.
The importance of dark skies will be a major theme of the evening event, which is put on in conjunction with Swansea Astronomical Society.
Earlier this year, the Garden was awarded Dark Sky Discovery Status – the first botanic garden in the UK to be given this honour – and SAS member Colin Miles said: “There will be a talk on the importance of dark skies, which are not just good news for star gazers but also of enormous benefit to the environment, not least because of the effects of light pollution on insects birds and bats.”
Colin also promised that, given clear skies, Star Party-goers will have the opportunity to see the Moon, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and other cosmic wonders. As well as the talk, there will be ‘telescope clinics’ in the Great Glasshouse so, if you have problems with your ‘scopes, bring them along and SAS experts will try to sort them out.
The Star Party runs from 6.30pm until 9pm, with cawl and hot chocolate available from the Med Cafe. Entrance fee £3, under 16s are free. Visitors are asked to use the Garden’s Corporate Entrance for this event.
