Pipeline Project bang on schedule

A massive £3.2-million flood prevention scheme and sewer pipeline running through the Millennium Coastal Park is right on schedule.

Despite horrendous weather conditions the scheme to upgrade Llanelli and Burry Port’s sewer network is running on time and will be completed before the National Eisteddfod, being held at Festival Fields in August.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is replacing the 3.5km wastewater pipe that runs from Burry Port to Pwll.

The project will bring long term benefits by helping to reduce the risk of potential bursts, flooding and pollution.

The majority of the pipeline work runs through MCP parkland at Burry Port woodlands. Despite the scale of the works there has been no impact on the wastewater service to local people and the heavily used Millennium Coastal Path has remained open throughout.

County executive board member for regeneration Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “This is an important element of the programme of wastewater improvements for the Burry Port estuary area which will help drive investment in the area.

“Welsh Water and their contractors are to be commended for ensuring the impact on visitors to the park is minimised.”

The pipeline has also traversed the busy Network Rail main Paddington-Fishguard line, itself a challenging engineering feat.

The area being excavated for the pipeline within the MCP will be reinstated and landscaped on settlement and completion of the scheme.
