Welsh sporting talent and Olympic Games commentator Non Evans MBE joins in the celebrations as the Carmarthenshire Baton Relay tours Llanelli.
The former rugby, judo, wrestling and weightlifting international star was visiting Ysgol y Strade when the baton arrived on the second leg of its 100-mile journey last Thursday.
The star, along with hundreds of schoolchildren, supported organisers Carmarthenshire County Council’s sports development team by joining in the celebrations and holding Commonwealth Games themed assemblies, lessons, games and displays as the baton tours secondary and primary schools in the town.
Officers from Dyfed Powys Police also exchanged hands with the baton as it assisted pupils on the 13-mile cycle journey from Carmarthen to Glanymor School as part of its county wide tour.
Coleg Sir Gar, Heol Goffa, St John Lloyd’s, Coedcae and Bryngwyn were just some of the schools the baton visited. Next stop is St Michael’s School before it leaves for Ammanford tomorrow.
The aim of the month long event is to inspire the county’s youngsters ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer will end its journey in Ammanford in April.
Senior sports and leisure manager, Car Daniels said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to the baton relay so far with children eager to take part in the relay celebrations. We’ve also been sharing the highlights of the tour on our Twitter and Facebook pages and had a great response from everyone.”
