Pupils from four Carmarthenshire schools are taking to the stage in a new music project to mentor the young.

Over the last 10 weeks the Rock Academy project along with the Carmarthenshire Communities First team has been working with students from Penygaer School, Coedcae School, Bryngwyn School and Llwynhendy Referral Unit to help pupils create their own rock band.

The project develops the opportunity to engage with students through the medium of music. It aims to build pupils’ self-esteem and confidence and increasing motivation to study more.

The gigs take place on the following dates and locations:

  • Tuesday, March 25 at Penygaer School from 1:30-3pm
  • Wednesday, March 26 at Coedcae School from 5-6:30pm
  • Thursday, March 27 at Bigyn School from 10-11am
  • Thursday, March 27 at Bryngwyn School from 5-6:30pm

Communities First Family Learning Worker Emma E Wood said:” Children appear to be excited and more interested in learning during their lessons and they are making rapid progress.”

The Communities’ First team aims to contribute, alongside other programmes, to narrowing the education, skills and health gaps between the most deprived and more affluent areas.

Executive Board Member for Regeneration and Leisure Cllr Meryl Gravell said:” For anybody learning to play an instrument it can be rather frustrating and being able to overcome these obstacles demonstrates a lot of self-discipline in addition to an enormous sense of achievement”
