New one-way streets have a calming effect

LAKEFIELD Road and parts of High Street Llanelli have gone one-way after a long campaign.

It has taken Carmarthenshire council nearly five years to drive through the initiative prompted by Llanelli Town Council and Lakefield Road Residents’ Association.

The initial objective was to improve safety and free up parking space for users of Lakefield Community Centre.

High Street residents over the years have reported escalating issues of drivers refusing to give way in the narrow road and same angry stand off’s of drivers where police had to be called.

Over the years there have been numerous public meetings and discussions with interested parties and yet when statutory regulations to start the scheme have been published there have been objections which have had to be overcome.

County executive board member for transport services Cllr Colin Evans said both schemes afforded numerous benefits including heightened safety at busy road junctions and a prevention of rat running to beat traffic lights in Queen Victoria Road.

He said: “The scheme will also offer more resident’s parking at the top of Lakefield Road which is in heavy demand.”

Local member Jeff Edmunds and chairman of the Lakefield Road Residents’ Association said: “This has been a long time coming and even in the first few days there has been a calming of drivers using both streets. The feedback from residents and drivers has been really positive.”
