Carmarthenshire County Council look set to change the County’s name and drop the shire!

It’s all part of a major re-branding for the County which sees Carmarthen become Wales’ newest City. A council spokesperson said:

“It’s part of our 2020 strategy to encourage more business growth to the County. Consultations have shown that a county with a city at its heart can be more economically vibrant than ones without. You only have to look at the success of Swansea and Cardiff.”

“When it came down to deciding a name, we looked at Llanelli but as the County is called Carmarthenshire, it made more sense to call it Carmarthen. Plus all of the transport links head direct to the Town.”

The plan is re-name the County, ‘City and County of Carmarthen’ by 2020 and according to the Council receives backing from the community. A Carmarthen Town FC spokesman said:

“We’re very interested in this idea, who knows it could be catalyst we need to get to the Premier League one day!”

However, not all areas of the county are happy with the plans. Llaneli Council spokesperson said:

“Llanelli is the county’s largest Town with the most population. It should be a city in its own right. This type of proposal knocks the identity of the area and is something that we have to contend with all the time from there.”

“In previous years, they even stopped us from having a touch of Hollywood Glamour!”
