Carmarthenshire Wildlife Watch are pleased to say that the police are now treating the death of a cygnet at Dafen pond as a wildlife crime.
The young swan was found dead Tuesday morning in the reeds of the pond by a Dafen resident walking her dog.
The dog walker noticed that one of the cygnets was missing and was extremely upset when she saw it in the reeds. Not knowing what to do she called on Carmarthenshire Wildlife Watch for help. Jo and Trixie went to the scene and were horrified to see that the young swan had an awful injury that indicated that it may have been shot. Jo phoned the police and they stayed at the scene for the police arrival. The policeman was not convinced that it was a wildlife crime and suggested that the RSPCA should be called to deal with it.
Jo phoned the RSPCA but they could not attend the scene and passed the information to the council requesting that they remove the swan from the water. Jo and Trixie were extremely upset with the lack of help received from both the police and the RSPCA as just only last week they attended a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation course in Somerset where they learned what to do and what help to expect in a situation like this.
Carmarthenshire Wildlife Watch would like to thank everyone who has supported them via social media. It is wonderful to see just how many people do care about the wildlife.
Thankfully the police have decided that the young swan’s death is a wildlife crime and they are going to increase the police presence in the area.
If you have any information regarding this incident please contact the police on 101.
