Nia Griffith MP has welcomed the award of a grant by Carmarthenshire County Council to the Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust which the MP chairs.

The Trust is seeking to renovate the former railway goods shed, which is accessed from Marsh St, off Station Road. Explaining the purpose of the grant, the MP who chairs the Trust said:

“We are very grateful to the County for this award, which we will put together with some money from the Architectural Heritage Fund, in order to employ a development officer, who will help us to make the necessary bids to sources like the Heritage Lottery Fund, in order to secure the money that we will need to restore this unique building.”

“Since we set up the Trust a couple of years ago, and had a feasibility study done, we have had a lot of interest from members of the public who are very keen to see this listed building restored, as it will give a real boost to the area.”

“We have also had approaches from various social enterprise groups and arts groups who can see the potential of the Shed and the surrounding land as a base for their activities. But good management and fundraising skills are essential for the success of any project as huge as this, so the development officer will help us achieve our vision of restoring this historic building and making it into a viable enterprise at the heart of the community.”
