It’s Compost Awareness Week from May 5–11 and to celebrate we are selling compost bins for just £5 instead of £18.

Residents are being urged to give home composting a go and take advantage of the one day cut price sale on Wednesday, May 7 at the Co-op car park in Cross Hands from 9am-2pm.

Executive Board Member for Technical Services Cllr Colin Evans said: “Many people don’t realise how easy it is to home compost or just how much of their household waste can actually be composted – from garden clippings to cardboard, tea bags to paper.

“By composting instead of putting everything in the rubbish bin we can greatly reduce the amount we send to landfill sites, which are filling up fast.

“What’s more, you’ll be left with a rich, free soil conditioner that has everything your plants need to flourish.

“And if you don’t have a garden, remember that you can still recycle any vegetable peelings, fruit cores, teabags and egg shells by using the council’s green food bins.”

The 330 litre compost bins are available to Carmarthenshire residents only and must be collected on the day (no delivery) with only one bin per address. It includes a free composting guide with every purchase.

The council is encouraging residents to reduce, reuse and recycle as we can no longer throw everything away as rubbish. The county has strict targets to meet to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill and increase its recycling rate.

For those who can’t make it on the day, compost bins can be purchased from the council for £18 including delivery. For further information visit www.carmarthenshire.gov.uk/recycling or call Carmarthenshire Direct on 01267 234567.
