A CARMARTHEN mother is urging other mums to give real nappies a try.

Sarah Jennings, whose daughter Seren is one years old, said using real nappies just a couple of days a week will make a difference not only to the environment but also to your pocket.

“It’s bewildering having a new baby,” said Sarah from Llangunnor.

“I didn’t start with real nappies straight away, but when I became more confident I thought I’d try real nappies.

“I don’t use them exclusively and mothers shouldn’t beat themselves up about using them all the time. Being a new mother is hard enough as it is, but using real nappies just a couple of days a week has got to be better for the environment. It means it’s less waste going to landfill, and you can see the difference in the weight of your black bag after two-weeks if you haven’t used real nappies.”

Real Nappy Week is held from April 28 to May 5 and Carmarthenshire County Council’s waste and recycling section has teamed up with local real nappy stockists Nappy Go Lucky and Littlelamb Nappies to raise awareness of the benefits of using real nappies and will be in Guildhall Square, Carmarthen today (Wednesday, April 30) between 10am and 3pm.

A new cut price trial pack (available to Carmarthenshire residents only) was launched at the event to celebrate Real Nappy Week.

The pack includes two pocket nappies (one size fits all) along with three cotton pre-folds and a wrap for just £15 instead of the recommended retail price of £29. The packs are limited to one per household, per child.(proof of address and copy of MAT1B form or birth certificate required)

Your little ones will be leading the way in the fashion stakes in their real nappies – they come in a range of styles, designs and colours – from denim to camouflage and cow print to ruffles.

“I think they’re so colourful and easy to use,” said Sarah.

“I was surprised to find they were lovely colours. You can have colour co-ordinated nappies to go with your babies outfit. I also wanted to support a local business so I get them from Nappy Go Lucky which means I’m able to support a local business.”

Council waste minimisation/recycling officer Karen Fulham said: “More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies. With today’s modern designs, washing machines and the use of flushable liners, using real nappies couldn’t be easier. So if you haven’t tried them yet, give them a go, you may just be surprised.”
