The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Construction, Design and Management Regulations (CDM) 2007 place a duty on all the Public Sector Bodies in Wales including local authorities and Housing Associations to ensure the competency of any contractors that it employs.

As a result, when tendering for work, a number of public sector bodies in Wales have chosen the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (or CHAS) as one vehicle for establishing contractors H&S compliance, in issuing any “construction” related contracts. In most tenders or pre-qualification questionnaires, most public sector bodies now ask for CHAS accreditation or equivalent within the Health and Safety section of questionnaires.

In order to help construction companies in Wales to win more contracts, the Welsh Government’s Business Wales program has arranged a seminar for contractors, sub-contractors and potential contractors to the public sector in Wales, whose clients include amongst others local authorities, housing associations, colleges, educational establishments, the NHS and regional police forces.

By attending one of these events you will discover and learn;

  • What the SSIP scheme is (Safety Schemes in Procurement)
  • How to fill in the Contractors Health and Safety Scheme (CHAS) forms, including guidance on the questions you will be expected to answer.
  • How to prepare a method statement and risk assessment which is vital when submitting your CHAS application.
  • An overview of CDM Regulations (Construction Design Management) and which elements you need to be aware of in your business.
  • Learn what support is available to your business through the CITB and Business Wales (who can assist you with filling in tender forms free of charge).
