CONTRACTORS were completing a £35k sand and silts dredging operation at Burry Port Marina this week.
The worst storms for many years had shipped more sands and silts at the entrance to the harbour than for many years.
Harbour master Rory Dickinson said heavy storms in the first three months of the year had caused colossal movements of sand within the Burry Estuary restricting the use of the channel to the sea from the harbour.
Silts and sands removed from the harbour have been used to replenish and environmentally enhance nearby beaches, particularly covering stones on the Burry Port west beaches between Burry Port and Pembrey Harbours.
Burry Port East Beach benefitting from the dredged sands in recent years is now one of the best surfing beaches in the county.
The walls of the west pier of the harbour have also been repaired in the last few weeks as part of the coastal protection works following the storms.
Contractors engaged on the project were TRJ and McCarthy Construction companies.
