AROUND 2,700 pensioners in Carmarthenshire will get extra help to pay their council tax this year.

The county council’s executive board approved a scheme that will give them around £100 each off their council tax bill.

The Welsh Government has provided funding for the scheme which is being administered by the county council.

Executive Board members had to decide whether to share the money between all pensioners, or only those who also qualified for a reduction in council tax or housing benefit.

Councillors decided to share the money between the ones already in receipt of a reduction.

Executive Board Member for Resources Cllr Jeff Edmunds said: ““The Executive Board decided to give the council tax reduction to those people who are already receiving partial council tax reduction and are of pensionable age.

“This will mean a reduction of about £100 per year to each of them, which will help those who need it most.”
