CYCLING enthusiasts are being encouraged to get on their bike and help pedal the miles to Glasgow.

The whole family can join in the Commonwealth Games themed event at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park on Saturday and help reach the distance to where the games are being held, which is just under 600 miles.

Those who don’t have bikes can still take part as organisers Carmarthenshire County Council’s Gwendraeth area sport development team will provide their own for the sporting event. Spin bikes will also be available to use, and the miles peddled will go towards the distance.

The aim of the event is to encourage as many people as possible to get active and to promote the council’s On Your Marks Get Set Go campaign.

The council’s dragon sports coordinator, Sarah Roberts said: “This is a great opportunity for the community to get on their bikes and get active. Whether they cycle around the lake or have a go on the spin bikes, people of all ages can come along and have a go.”

A similar event is being held the day before where schools will be taking part.

The park is 2.5km long and would need to be cycled 236 to match the distance from here to Glasgow.

OYMGSG aims to promote sports linked to the Commonwealth Games within the schools and communities of Carmarthenshire.

Headed by the council’s sport and leisure team it also celebrates the sporting achievements of athletes, coaches, schools and volunteers in our communities.

Carmarthenshire has a wealth of sporting talent from grass roots level to elite and have been celebrating by showcasing a different sport/sports each month until the games in July.
