Cilycwm Community Association has produced a bilingual book on the history of the names of farms and fields in the area providing a new and innovative history of the Upper Tywi Valley.
Local volunteers researched the historical details, gathered information on local field names and meanings and researched buildings. The aim is for the book to educate and inform visitors and residents of the human story in the Cilycwm area.
The book is over 250 pages long with a superb series of photos, information on the farms in the area, glossary of terms, details from tithe maps and it supplements the two community websites, giving it an international audience.
Project Manager, Dafydd Tomos, said: “This was a special opportunity to raise awareness of Blaenau Tywi’s rich heritage.”
Cilycwm Community Association received funding of £13,105 from RDP Sir Gâr’s Landscape and Heritage Grant for the project. The Landscape and Heritage grant, delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Tywi Centre, aims to support projects that promote the area’s cultural distinctiveness. It is funded by the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 -2013 which is funded by the Welsh Government and European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and also Natural Resources Wales, National Trust and Carmarthenshire County Council.
“This is a fantastic effort by the group who have spent over two years researching the Upper Tywi Valley to produce this amazing book,” said Emyr Price of the Tywi Centre.
