Packed lunch warning

Packed lunches can be tricky during the hot summer days because lunch boxes are often left unrefrigerated, which can cause dangerous bacteria to form.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s award winning catering department are urging parents and care providers to stop and consider school meals before they pack their child’s lunches.

Costing just £2.20 a day pupils can have a main meal and pudding – which in the summer months can include a cooling ice cream treat. Water is always readably available to quench the thirst. Each school meal accounts for one-third of a child’s daily nutritional intake and children benefit from the healthiest lunches possible, receiving a well-balanced, tasty dish which can prolong their energy for their afternoon lessons.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s catering department develop the menus following the Welsh Assembly rules for healthy nutritious meals and are measured against tough national standards produced by a program called Saffron.

Catering Services Manager Sandra Weigel said: “It’s hard to pack a nutritionally balanced packed lunch that not only provides children with the energy they need for a hot summer’s day, but stays cool and safe too. Providing your child with a school meal is the best way to do that, and during the summer we’ve packed in plenty of tasty choices.”
