YSGOL Maes y Gwendraeth has become the first secondary school in Carmarthenshire where every pupil in a whole year group have become members of the library.
All the children in year seven have signed up to become members of the county council’s library service.
The service works closely with schools to encourage more pupils to join their local library.
School librarian Angela Evans was keen for pupils to use the service to download free e-books or e-magazines which would encourage them to read more.
The facility to download has been available to library members for a while, and is becoming more and more popular, particularly with younger people.
The traditional book borrowing service remains available, plus members can hire CDs and DVDs, surf the net or find out information. There are also events for children of all ages, including homework clubs.
Libraries executive board member Cllr Meryl Gravell said: “It’s fantastic that every pupil in year seven has become a member of Carmarthenshire Libraries.
“The service has evolved in line with modern technology and I’m sure they will enjoy the benefits for many years to come.”
Many primary schools have already arranged for all their pupils to become members of the library.
The Welsh Government via CyMAL is also piloting a scheme in some authorities where all year four pupils are made library members and this will be rolled out throughout Wales later this year.
