Are your Buildings Secured?

At this time of year many of us like to get the windows open and leave them open all day and quite often into the evening.

Carmarthenshire Community Safety Partnership recommends the following simple steps to avoid theft of property from insecure buildings, sheds, and garages:

• Never leave doors or windows open or unlocked when leaving your property.

• Never leave garage or shed doors open when working in another part of the garden.

• Never leave vehicle windows open when leaving the vehicle unattended, and never leave items on display.

• Check your shed and outbuilding doors for security and fit good quality ironmongery, padlocks and alarms etc.

• If you are building a new property ensure that the openings are boarded up and that all plant and tools are locked away in a secure container at all times.

• Try to mark your possessions with an identifying mark such as your postcode, house name number etc.

• If you get tradesman calling or offering work, get a vehicle registration number and business card from them. Remember do not let them into your home, and always lock the back or front door before opening the other.

• Walk- in burglaries occur due to doors being closed and not locked, please remember to turn the key to secure your doors and keep unwanted visitors out.

• For all cases and situations there are a number of quality security items available in the market place.

If you need security advice or property marking pens, please contact your local Community Safety Officer by dialling 101.
