A LEADING Carmarthenshire councillor has expressed his disappointment that the Bobby Van service is under threat.
Public protection executive board member Cllr Jim Jones had written to Police and Crime Commissioner Christopher Salmon after hearing rumours of the service being discontinued.
He has now received a response from the Chief Constableâs office confirming that Dyfed Powys Police is unable to commit to the previous level of funding for it.
The Bobby Van will continue whilst the force discusses how best to provide a service which meets their objectives.
Cllr Jones said: âThis scheme has been invaluable in promoting security to some of our most vulnerable people, which is vital in the fight against property crime.
âIt has also played a part in providing reassurance to the elderly and victims of domestic violence, which has in turn ensured that they feel safer in their own homes.
âIt is very disappointing to hear that the Bobby Van is to be a victim of budget cuts.
âI do understand and empathise with Dyfed Powys Police, these are tough times and budget cuts are inevitable.
âHowever, the Bobby Van is a much loved service which has helped many, many people and it will be a sad day to see it go.â
