Pembrey’s salad days campers get a splash of Mayo

Pembrey Country Park’s newly appointed camping expert has been getting to grips with tent pegs whilst learning Welsh.

Kieran Mayo’s “Bore Da Campers” and “hei-di-heis” are going down better than sizzling bacon and sausages among the early morning campers at the blitzed out summer season park camp site.

Kieran, from Cornwall, fought off scores of candidates who applied for the Pembrey post of ‘camping concierge’ which was described in the Daily Telegraph as “possibly the best job in Wales”.

Kieran started on Monday and has been spending his days at the fastest growing campsite in Wales helping campers with all their outdoor living requirements and even teaching youngsters to ride a bike for the first time.

Kieran, aged 33, is familiarising himself with the best beach in Europe in the eight-mile long Cefn Sidan, its backcloth forestry and the adjacent 500-acres of parkland where the spectacular campsite is set.

He said, looking out on his new domain: “I have got the best office in the country. Campfire cooking and sand in my sandals! Outdoor living is where I hang my hat.

“The Welsh are so friendly and are really quizzical about by accent but appreciate my humble Welsh offerings which the council’s translation department have helped me with.

“But hey there are even Scots and French on site so the appeal of camping at Pembrey is reaching far and wide so it bore da, bon jour and och aye.”

He will not only be engaging with local campers on a daily basis but also giving some virtual time to campers through blogging and social media.

Kieran has previously worked for Hereford City Council, the National Trust, South West and BCTV.
