BUDDING footballers in Llanelli were treated to a visit from a former Swansea City Football Club star.
Over 60 youngsters were taking part in a summer camp at Llanelli Leisure Centre when Lee Trundle made his appearance Thursday afternoon.
The ex Swans striker took time out to chat with the five -13 year-olds before they bombarded him with questions ranging from his football career to his hairstyle. He then went on to sign their T-shirts and posed for pictures.
The two-day event was organised by Swansea City Community Trust, Welsh Football Trust and Carmarthenshire Council’s sport and leisure department.
Its aim was to encourage children to have fun, keep active and learn new football skills. It also provided an opportunity for those who enjoy the game, but are not affiliated to any clubs, to gain experience and build confidence.
The council’s Actif facilities manger, Steve Owens said: “We were so lucky and thrilled when
we found out Lee had made time in his busy schedule to pop down. The children were over
the moon to meet him and he spent time with them answering all their questions. Working in partnership has huge benefits and today is testament to that.”
Due to demand hourly sessions are now being delivered to under 7s from the leisure centre on Tuesdays between 4-6pm.
Lee Trundle, who played 194 games and scored 91 goals during his time with the premiership division club, said: “These summer camps are brilliant and the turnout in Llanelli is the best I’ve ever been to. Not only do these camps and sessions enhance football skills, they also help children to interact with each other which build up their confidence. They’re also a great link to Swansea City Football Club and provide an opportunity for those with potential to be moved onto the academy. The more people that attend these camps enable us to deliver more courses which in turn benefits both Llanelli youngsters and Swansea City Football Club.”
