A LLANELLI woman has been ordered to pay more than £800 for dumping a black refuse bag at the recycling banks in Dafen.

Carmarthen Magistrates convicted Lisa Roberts of Maestir, Felinfoel, in her absence.

The 31-year-old (26/08/1983) was fined £600 and ordered to pay £60 victim surcharge and £200 contribution towards prosecution costs.

Council environmental enforcement officers saw Roberts emptying waste from her vehicle into the black bin bag and place it in front of the litter bin under the ‘No fly-tipping’ sign at the recycling site at Dafen Pond and then get back into her vehicle.

A letter was sent to Miss Roberts offering the option of accepting a Fixed Penalty Notice for the offence contrary to Section 2 of the Refuse Disposals (Amenity) Act 1978, but no response to the letter was received.

Executive board member for Environmental and Public Protection, Cllr Jim Jones, said: “These sites are important facilities for communities and only glass, paper, cans and textiles should be taken for recycling. Dumping rubbish in front of these banks will not be tolerated and anyone caught will be prosecuted.

“We are appealing to residents with any information that could help catch those responsible to please get in touch. By working together we can improve the environment in Llanelli for both residents and visitors to the town.”

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and more serious offences can lead to fines of up to £50,000 and/or up to five years in prison.
