Biodiversity officer Isabel Macho took a moth trap to Saron School recently and with the help of colleague Mat Ridley was able to show the pupils the amazing range of moths that occur in the schools ground but mostly hidden away from sight during the day.

Saron School, near Ammanford, has a nature area within their school grounds and a very keen nature group. The moth trap was set overnight and staff and pupils were amazed by what was discovered the next morning – 60 species of moth were identified numbering about 200 individual moths in the trap!

The pupils were shown the moths and find out more about them and why they are an important part of our natural environment. The pupils had a chance to see all the moths and even handle some like the elephant hawk-moth about 25 were caught in the trap so there were plenty to go around!

It is hoped that the trap will be taken to other schools in due course. In addition the Conservation Section is buying a camera that can be used by schools to record wildlife that uses their grounds at night and hopefully will reveal more secrets of our nigh time wildlife!
