YOUNG people across Carmarthenshire are invited to attend the annual youth conference taking place in November.

This year, the event entitled ‘Abuse at Home, You’re Not Alone’ will celebrate International Children’s Rights.

It will take place at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli from 9.30am to 2.30pm on November 20, and aims to raise awareness and educate young people on the subject of domestic abuse.

All secondary schools and youth projects in the county are invited to attend the conference which is being organised in partnership by Carmarthenshire Youth Council and Carmarthenshire County Council.

There will be workshops, speeches and group discussions which will address the main themes of the conference and challenge young people to think about the importance of healthy, happy teenage relationships.

Young People’s Participation Officer Sarah Powell said: “The purpose of the conference is to bring young people together to share their views, ideas and experiences on issues around domestic abuse while also meeting professionals who can raise awareness of the signs of abuse and what they can do about it.”

Executive board for education and children’s services Keith Davies added: “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, this is especially true when the abuse is emotional rather than physical.

“Knowing and noticing the signs of an abusive relationship are the first step to ending it. No one should live in fear of the person they love.

“The conference aims to help young people and professionals working with young people recognise warning signs and what they can do and what help is available in Carmarthenshire.”

Carmarthenshire Youth Council Chairperson Freya Amsbury said: It’s really important to raise awareness about how to spot domestic abuse and where to get help as it affects so many young people. The conference provides us with an opportunity to communicate openly.”

The conference is free, and youth groups and schools who wish to attend should arrange for young people and a member of staff to represent their school or project, and confirm their attendance by Thursday 13th November 2014.
