Thought for the week (we 12th October 2014)

With the autumn conference season having come to a close all political parties are claiming to be confident and in good heart.

As usual there was much rhetoric, new policies were revealed, the troops were rallied and party leaders were acclaimed with standing ovations. As delegates returned to their homes and MP’s to their constituencies there’s much speculation as to how the political scene in the UK will change in the seven months leading up to the general election in May next year.

The emergence of UKIP is a major thorn in the sides of the traditional parties and it will be interesting as to how the electorate will respond to the claims and counter claims which will dominate the political scene.

The Bible has much to say about those who rule and govern. The prophets of the Old Testament did not spare their words of condemnation towards those who ruled unjustly in their day. When the nation wanted a king the shepherd boy David was chosen by God to replace the tired and discredited Saul. Despite his youth and inexperience David became the king most beloved by God and the people.

So with the political party conference season over for another year let’s hope that all the potential and promise we have heard will filter down so that the needs of the people will be met.

There can be no greater council for those who seek to lead and govern that which the word of God gives. “Righteousness upholds a nation” said the prophet and that greater command of Jesus “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.

With that advice on board then there will be a new impetus of care and justice that will give us the hospitals, schools and public services we deserve.
