Businesses urged to prepare for new food laws

Food businesses in Carmarthenshire are being urged to get to grips with new laws coming in to force governing the way they label meals and takeaways.

Under the new Food Information Regulation 2014, coming in to force on December 13 this year, any business that provides meals or sells food has a legal duty to provide information about allergenic ingredients. This includes any meals provided at cafes and restaurants, or pre-prepared or packaged loose food including bread rolls, sandwiches, cakes and deli products. It also covers catering in establishments such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

The regulation lists 14 allergens that must be clearly identified to their customers which can be done in a variety of ways – on a menu, chalkboard or an information pack, and if sold over the phone either orally or in writing when the food is collected or delivered to the customer.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Trading Standards unit has written to over 1,100 food establishments advising them of the new legislation and offering advice.

Trading Standards Officer Carwyn Phillips said: “This is a major change to the food industry, and one which will affect every business that sells or provides food. We want all businesses to be aware of their legal obligations and would advise they think ahead, start making changes and training staff about their new responsibilities.”

The regulation comes in to force to offer more protection to people who suffer allergic reactions to certain foods. These reactions can be severe and lead to serious illness or even death.

The Food Standards Agency has produced an information booklet outlining the new regulations, which is being provided to local businesses.

Cllr Jim Jones, Executive Board Member for Public Protection, said: “We are happy to help and provide any advice we can. We don’t want to see any businesses falling foul of this law.”
