Tributes have been paid to former county Councillor Howard Jones who has passed away.

Mr Jones of Pontyates was described as an active politician, an ex miner who continued to represent miners’ interests throughout his life, and a servant to his community.

During his time in local government, both for Dyfed and Carmarthenshire County Councils, Mr Jones played a leading role.

He was Chair of Dyfed from 1993-94, and Chair of Carmarthenshire from 1997-98. Mr Jones, who died aged 91, was also an active representative of the National Union of Mineworkers for many years.

Council Leader Cllr Kevin Madge said: “Howard Jones was well respected throughout Carmarthenshire and Wales.

“He devoted a lifetime of service to people through local government, through the NUM and through his own community.

“The people of Carmarthenshire owe Howard a huge debt for the work he carried out on their behalf.

“He had high values and morals, he had time for everyone, he always had good, sound advice and a listening ear.

“Howard achieved so much during his lifetime, he leaves a legacy his family can be proud of.

“My sympathy goes to the family for their loss, and all our thoughts are with them at this sad time.”
