Youngsters are getting a sporting wheelchair thanks to Community Chest.

Llanelli Tennis & Squash Club has been given a grant to develop young members into coaches and to buy a junior sporting wheelchair for its disabled users.

Some £1160 was distributed by Carmarthenshire County Council’s sports and leisure team earlier this month.

Community Chest co-ordinator Hilary Jones said: “The club applied for two grants. One for £660 which will go towards three level one coaching courses. The other £1,500 will go towards a junior sports chair which will enable people with a disability to take part in tennis.”

Under new Sport Wales guidelines, clubs can apply for two different projects as long as the second project is based on tackling inequalities such as women and girls, disability and inclusion.

Community Chest is funded by Sport Wales and distributed via the council’s sport and leisure section.

Disability Sport Wales Development Officer for Carmarthenshire, Lisa Pudner said: “This is great news for the club and will encourage those with a disability to take part in a great sport.”

Youth clubs/groups, sports clubs/organisations and non-sporting organisations with an interest to provide physical activity (eg community hall associations, community councils) can apply for up to £1,500.

Applications are encouraged from clubs who want to develop opportunities for women and girls, the disabled and from clubs within areas of social deprivation.
