Drivers asked to allow more time for road works

DRIVERS are being asked to allow extra times for journeys in and around Llanelli because of a series of unavoidable road works.

While the long running Welsh Water Rainscape works are coming to an end on the main road sections around Asda other drainage and road safety measures are being installed near New Dock Stars and Sandy Road.

Because works are advanced on delivering the new Ysgol y Strade school extension, work to construct a road crossing for surface water work has been brought forward to start November 10 and to be completed by November 19.

At New Dock Stars the crossing point is to be improved. A new pedestrian crossing is under construction to serve Coedcae School where the civil works were undertaken using temporary lights at half term.

At Sandy, the first tranche of works will be a drainage connection undertaken as part of the Stradey School extension. These drainage works will be completed before the Christmas Carnival on Friday November 21st which starts from Festival Fields, Pwll, before travelling into town.

A proposed mini roundabout will also be installed in Sandy Road at its junction with Denham Avenue, as part of the agreed traffic calming measures for the school extension. This work will follow on but has not yet been programmed. The work, however, has to be completed before the end of March, 2015.

County executive board member for transport, Cllr Colin Evans, said: “There is never a good time to carry out such important planned works but the utilities, contractors and the council teams work together where possible to keep disruption to a minimum.

“Our transport teams are insisting to contractors where three-phase lights are in operation that they are manned at peak times, 8am to 6pm, to limit hold-up times.

“Where possible work is carried out in school or national holiday times. The Sandy Road work was to be carried out over the Christmas Holiday but building work is advanced on the school extension any delays now on the school build would incur significant delay penalty costs.

“With regards the Welsh Water Rainscape project, the Asda scheme is drawing to a close at Robinson Street. This scheme required three crossings, two at the roundabouts and one at the former Pottery street junction. From Pottery Street the works will progress in to Wern Road and the surrounding area away from the main traffic route.”
