In association with Llanelli Music Scene local band 27 Cobalt have picked Friday 14th November to launch their new album at the Masons Arms in Llanelli.
The album entitled ‘27’ is the band’s first release since reforming in 2013. The 13 track album which will also go live on Soundcloud on 14th November contains a mix of old and new 27 Cobalt songs . Drummer Mike Thomas, Bassist Jason Duxberry and Vocalist/ Guitarist Alun Jones recorded the DIY album in Jason’s attic with Jason doing all the engineering & Mike and Alun helping mix the album. The band said they want to try and encourage younger bands that they do not need a record label- ‘ you can do it yourself at home with no help from anyone.’
I was handed a demo of the album at the end of September and it has taken pride of place in my car cd player pretty much since . Additionally in the process of listening to the album I’ve managed to brain wash all of my car passengers with 27 Cobalt’s original tunes.
‘27’ is laiden full of catchy tunes, riffs and hooks and there are no fillers on this album . It was exciting for me to hear the demo as I remember some of the original songs and listening to older tracks including ‘Model’, ‘Falling into Lust’ & ‘All Night Disco’ reminded me just how good this band really are as a unit. Newer tracks on the album include opening track ‘Dread,’ ‘Idiot Son’, ‘82’ and ‘Everything’s Fine’.
Tunes such as ‘All Night Disco’, ‘Better Looking’ and ‘Come On Up’ with their upbeat and bouncy vibe have cheered up many a gloomy work day for me. This is just what you want from your music; a real pick me up…….or a pick axe if you listen to and sing along with Track 10, ‘12 Rounds’ !!!
Listen out for the intricate guitar riffs on tunes including ‘12 Rounds’ and the beautiful atmospheric guitar solo at the end of Track 4, the new tune ‘Everything’s Fine, which is a real mantra.’
Track listings include:
1 Dread
2. Idiot Son
3. Model
4.Everything’s Fine
5.Falling into Lust
6.All Night Disco
7.Hairdresser
8. 82
9. India
10. 12 Rounds
11. Better Looking
12. Dirty
13. Come on Up
Vocalist & Guitarist Alun Jones says he wrote Track 1, new track, ‘Dread’ after listening to Queens of the Stone Age for about a month and after reading advice off the back of a medication packet.
‘Everything’s Fine’ was written on Christmas day and Alun states it is dedicated to the memory of a good friend. My favourite guitar piece, the solo on this track was performed using a James Hetfield Truckster.
Alun said Track 8 (Straight and True) ‘82’ is a heavier and darker tune influenced by some of the newer metal in recent years.
Drummer Mike said he has enjoyed constructing and putting together the songs as part of the writing and recording process and he always looks forward to playing the tunes live.
Bassist Jason Duxberry said ‘ All recording was done at home in our Ferryside attic studio. Its been a steep learning curve but worth the effort. We are happy with the results and the album is a good reflection of the diversity of the band. We are gathering momentum and already have a whole heap of new material for the next album- which we will start recording straight after the ’27 launch party in the Masons.
27 Cobalt say they would like to thank the vibrant music scene in the Llanelli area for being a big part in their decision to reform the band .
