Carmarthenshire County Council has welcomed the confirmation that Tesco is still looking at plans to build a store in Burry Port.

Local concerns were raised by national reports that the supermarket giant was cancelling plans for 49 new stores across the country as well as closing 43 unprofitable stores. But Tesco has now confirmed that Burry Port is still under consideration.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We’re pleased to have planning permission for a new store in Burry Port and we’re grateful for the support local people have given our plans. We are discussing a range of options with the council, including the possibility of a smaller store and we’ll keep the local community updated.”

The Executive Board Member for Regeneration Cllr. Meryl Gravel welcomed the news, stating: “The council is glad that Tesco is still interested in developing at Burry Port and the continued dialogue shows confidence by Tesco that Burry Port is a good place to invest.”
