Disappointment has been expressed following the approval of the U.K Government’s ‘Charter for Budget Responsibility’ which will bind the next Westminster Government to billions of pounds of further austerity.
On Tuesday 13th January, all of the London-controlled parties voted together for £30bn worth of cuts to our public services over the next five years.
The majority of Labour MP’s including Llanelli’s Labour MP voted with the Tory-led UK Government. The motion was passed by 515 votes to 18.

Vaughan Williams, Plaid Llanelli Westminster Candidate said:
“Austerity has failed. It has let down thousands of families here in Llanelli resulting in huge job losses, the cruel + unworkable ‘Bedroom Tax’ which must be axed, a sharp increase in demand for foodbanks as well as people having to choose between heating and eating.
“I reject austerity. On the campaign trail, I have met many residents who are understandably concerned with the austerity measures and cuts being forced upon them. You do not create a fairer society by attacking the most vulnerable, we must protect the weak from the strong.
Plaid Cymru is committed to ending austerity and providing a positive new approach. By investing in infrastructure, scrapping Trident, tackling tax avoidance as well as raising living standards through delivering a living wage. Another future is possible.”
Llanelli resident Timothy Freeman added:
“The most vulnerable that of the elderly, sick, disabled and our young people are continuing to pay the price for the collapse of the banks.
“Austerity has been self-defeating therefore I was surprised to discover our Labour MP voting with the Tories for these further cuts. This falls nothing short of a betrayal to all of us who have suffered under the coalition’s destructive policies.”
Sean Rees, Plaid Llanelli Campaign Manager continued:
“Westminster clearly isn’t working for Wales. Our Town deserves better, it is time to put Llanelli before London. Therefore Llanelli residents will have a very important choice to make at May’s Westminster election.
The choice will be between more of the same oppressive Tory/Labour cuts or the opportunity for a fresh new start with Vaughan Williams in building a real progressive alternative of hope and fairness for our communities.”
