Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and here in Carmarthenshire thousands of school children kick-start their day with a full tummy, thanks to free breakfast clubs.

As part of National Breakfast Week this week, Carmarthenshire County Councilā€™s Catering Service is raising awareness of the free breakfast initiative available throughout the county.

Breakfast clubs help improve the health and concentration of pupils, and support in raising the standards of learning, plus attainment.

Catering services manager Sandra Weigel said: ā€œBreakfast is recognised as the most important meal of the day and evidence shows that a healthy breakfast is linked to better health, concentration and behaviour in our schools.

ā€National Breakfast Week provides us with the perfect opportunity to highlight this message, and to encourage more children to join their schoolā€™s breakfast club.ā€

There are currently 100 primary schools taking part in the scheme across the county. Pupils enjoy a free breakfast consisting of a choice of non sugar-coated cereal, toast, fruit and a glass of milk or fruit juice.

Executive Board Member for Childrenā€™s Services, Cllr Keith Davies, said: ā€œIt is fantastic to see children gathered together before the school day to enjoy a healthy breakfast. ā€œThere is a fantastic take-up in Carmarthenshire, but thereā€™s always room for more.ā€

Carmarthenshire Catering Service runs the Primary Free Breakfast Initiative on behalf of the Welsh Government, and has the highest take-up in the whole of Wales.
