Plans announced by the Welsh Labour Government which will strengthen rules on smoking in cars will be introduced later this year.

The proposals which include smoking in cars with children will come before AMs in the Senedd for approval this summer. There has been a longstanding awareness campaign on the issue. Public opinion in a recent consultation showed 86% of respondents agreeing with the prohibition.

Research shows that harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke put children at particular risk from second-hand exposure in the confined spaces of a vehicle. This can lead to a range of chronic diseases through the thousands of harmful chemicals in second-hand smoke.

Regulations would make it an offence to smoke in a private vehicle carrying someone under the age of eighteen, or failing to prevent smoking in that vehicle.

Keith Davies AM said:

“This is a welcome announcement by the ealth Minister on a campaign I have supported for some time. It is founded in scientific research, has the support of the overwhelming population, and is labelled a victory by charities such as the British Lung Foundation.”

“Wales has led the way on this issue at UK level. For years the “Fresh tart Wales” educational campaign has brought the matter to the forefront – using advertising to encourage parents and carers to keep their cars smoke-free.”

“I want to know your views on the issue. Recent research shows almost one in ten children saying smoking is allowed in their family car. Contact me on 01554 774902 or email Keith.Davies@assembly.wales .”

“I look forward to the regulations coming before the Assembly this summer so we can expand protection from second-hand smoke amongst children in vehicles.”
