A budding young writer from a Llanelli school has been recognised for her work.

Lowri Bowen from Ysgol Maes Y Morfa put pen to paper and won a writing competition organised by Oriel Myrddin Gallery.

The seven-year-old emerged victorious out of dozens of entrants after her confident and immersive description of exhibit ‘Thin Place’ won over the judges.

Primary school children from across the county who attended exhibitions at the Carmarthen Gallery were asked to write ten lines on their interpretation of the exhibition ’ Thin Place’.

Runner up was eight year old Pepper Hughes and in third place was eight year old Natalia Klys. The three winners were presented with a special writing set which included a real ink pen, and wax seal all presented in a magical box.

Judging the entries were contemporary art journalist, Alicia Miller and lecturer and art writer, Ciara Healy.

Ciara Healy said: “We were impressed by the entries, and fragments of writing showed a deep connection to some of the artworks and the idea of the exhibition as a whole.”

The aim of the competition was to inspire learning creativity, among inquisitive and curios young minds. By making children aware that a major gallery is on their doorstep could lead to developing artists of the future.

Community art coordinator, Seren Stacey said: “These pieces of writing really show us how the exhibition has captured the children’s imagination.”

The free exhibition ‘Thin Place’ continues until Saturday, February 28 at Oriel Myrddin Gallery
