New flowers planters have been installed in Narberth’s main car park that are brightening up the town’s busy thoroughfare and providing a safe place to walk for pedestrians.
The planters, which perfectly complement the dramatic mural on the Span Arts building in Narberth’s Town Moor carpark, have been installed with Pembrokeshire County Council’s permission, in an initiative to increase safety for passers-by.
Gwen Watson, manager of Span Arts, explains the blooming new addition: “Due to the ongoing construction work going on in the Town Moor and the number of cars parking for free in front of the Span Arts building, the public have had to walk in the way of oncoming traffic.
“Mums with strollers, wheelchair users and the elderly have all had to face traffic head-on to return to their cars or visit the town’s public toilets. Our customers weren’t happy, so we approached the council to install planters to increase the walkway.”
Pembrokeshire County Council gave Span Arts permission to get the plant boxes built at their own expense. The results have been immediately effective; with pedestrians given nearly 2 more meters width of pavement to walk on.
The striking black flower boxes, which match the council’s own planters along Narberth’s high street, were created by John Lancaster, owner of local company StudioRacks who make recording studio furniture and equipment racks, and potted by Narberth heroes Julia and Gus Phillips who upkeep the town’s summer flower displays. All three are active Span Arts volunteers and donated their time and effort to the good cause.
Span Arts customers have expressed their pleasure at the new arrivals, with one local saying, “What a great idea, the flower boxes are so bright and cheery! And I just love the mural too. Really brightens the place up.”
This colourful addition comes at an exciting time for the organisation, ahead of the launch of their 3-year Big Lottery funded intergenerational project which will see them helping reduce social isolation in rural areas through a wide-reaching programme of arts activities.
Span Arts relies on funding and membership to continue its work in Pembrokeshire and the local areas. To volunteer, become a member or donate to Span Arts visit: www.span-arts.org.uk
